Boss Stuff on the Interwebs: Wednesday Links 23/03/11

• A "lost" album from David Bowie--who, along with champagne and jelly beans, is the closest thing I have to religion--is now available thanks to the twin miracles of the internet and theft. Electric Comic Book let me know.

• Stereogum has a "Recipe for Radiohead", including the correct proportions of "refrigerator magnet poetry" and "empty spaces where guitar used to be." Actually, it's originally from The Daily but I'm not buying into that wannabe-hipster malarkey. Even if I do miss those guitars.

• Neon Filler is at 50-41 on their super-duper list of the top indie/alternative albums of all time. This week includes, The Kinks, The Pretenders, and Calexico.

• After the two recent earthquakes in Christchurch, local label City Kids Records sneaked into one of the condemned buildings to record four local bands. The Devil Has the Best Tuna reports on Gigglepop, Sleeping with Students, and more.

• Aquarium Drunkard calls Smoke Ring for my Halo Kurt Vile's "best record yet". You should at least check that out.

• Edwyn Collins, he of the eternally awesome Girl Like You, is back and has teamed up--however unlikely it may seem--with The Drums (among others). Andrew Evans Talks at You digs it.

• GROUPLOVE's Don't Say Oh Well was Song of the Day over at You Can't Hear It on the Radio, where they describe it as "an adrenaline shot in  music form". They also describe the band's sound as "loose (and) barely keeping it together", which means I need to find a new title for my autobiography.

A Complete King of Limbs Cover Already Happened, and I'm Even a Little Late With It.

Apparently there's already a cover of Radiohead's less than week-old King of Limbs album. It's the work of Robotanists who challenged themselves to put together the entire eight-song effort within 24 hours of the album release. It's a fun project, if a clear publicity stunt. But consider this: I am in Moscow, you are wherever you are, and suddenly we're both listening to this band from LA.  So points for efficiency. And I have to say it's not half bad, given the timeframe.

Radiohead Release a Day Early. Millions Freakout. Mr Shuffleupagus Shrugs.

Radiohead announced early this week that they were going to release their new album, The King of Limbs, this Saturday, February 19th. Instead, they released it today, just because Radiohead has a long history of doing things that would typically delight fans and piss off record companies, and I've always liked that about them.


Now I know that a lot of people are excited about this, but I have a confession that no music blogger should ever make: I haven't been a huge Radiohead fan since Kid A. That's the truth, and feel free to freak the fuck out in the comments section over it. I rank their early albums among some of the greatest in my music collection, and they were beyond pivotal in my musical coming of age. But at a very clear point Radiohead got so into the "aural landscapes" that they forgot about the "melodies" we plebians might enjoy. There comes a point where you've stopped making artistic music and started making noise art, which itself is a fine idea, but I'm personally not enjoying it on a musical level. 


So I wasn't even sure I would post about the new Radiohead. I didn't want to have to verbally swoon over glitches and moans that never climax or pay off. But here I am, video in tow, giving you a rundown of my fizzled Radiohead relationship. Why? Because I like the images. And because I know you all want to see it anyway. And because I know I'm still going to listen to the whole album. And because they did that very cool early release thing for everybody. These guys are nothing if not very cool. 


My thoughts on Lotus Flower? Sounds like In Rainbows. That is all.

Boss Stuff on the Interwebs: Wednesday Links 19/01/11

• From their hometown of Lucerne, Guerolitomusic brings you post-punk/new-wave/mad-80's band Dans La Tente. Check it out, because who can hate the Swiss? Really. Unless you've been stabbed by a well-crafted pocketknife, I guess. Then you get a pass.

• Thanks to insomnia, Damien Is Listening To found this 17-minute Radiohead (re)mixtape, cementing my belief that without insomnia the blogosphere would not exist. Also, not without desperate cravings for attention.  

• Breaking More Waves investigates whether 2011 is the beginning of the end for dubstep, then gives some Skream and Example downloads that'll make you hope not. 

• Little Reviews does a... little review of The Love Language's lo-fi, indie pop album Libraries. Sachez que le site est français, mais la plupart de la musique est en anglais. Good stuff all around.

• The Morning After Pill has the video for Not in Love.  It features neither Crystal Castles nor Robert Smith, but if you have a thing for pictures of pretty girls as seen through a coma haze, this is your lucky day.

• You know those thirty-five inexplicable cable shows about cake? Well I guess an appearance by Pavement might make one of them suck less. If not, then at last you can watch one of the eleventy-nine shows about bridal dresses. (Stereogum)

• Speaking of tv, Ultra8210 has The Black Keys vs. Vampire Weekend competing in a "sell-out-off" on The Colbert Report. I'd tell you why, but frankly, if you haven't clicked by now, there's no helping you.

We here at Mr.Shuffleupagus (me) are having problems of the technical kind. The computer tries to shut down just as the internet gets started, leaving me with a kind of blogging blueballs. I'm not sure what's going on with it exactly, but suffice to say it's probably Belgium's fault. In any case, I've got people looking into it:


 If anyone can get my PB&J sandwich out of there, it's these guys.
