Justin Vernon Isn't Trying to Make Me Cry, For Once: The Shouting Matches

Bon Iver won't be performing at Coachella, but Justin Vernon will be. This time, the indie frontman and noted passive aggressive Grammy speech-giver  will be backed by a very different group.

Completely bypassing any timid navel-gazing, bandmates Brian Moen (Peter Wolf Crier), and Phillip Cook (Megafaun) bash out bluesy, old-school rock, as Vernon gives the autotune a rest to howl in his best Otis Redding. The result is The Shouting Matches, a group that's been around and recording since 2008, but hasn't really put much out there, til now.

And how do they do? Well, Mother When's the Judgement Gonna Come has a raucus, I'm-totally-gonna-get-a-staph-infection-in-this-dive-bar feel to it, while the live I Had a Real Good Lover makes me want to lie on the floor, belting out lyrics in a whisky stupor.

So it sounds awesome.

Mouthoil, their first EP is due out sometime this year. Probably.

  • Or maybe you just got deja vu? Because this is a lot like Coachella. I'm not saying that's good, and I'm not saying that's bad. But I am saying that the festival you pick is more or less down to whether you'd rather see Eminem and Florence and the Machine or Kanye West and Kings of Leon

Frankly, it makes little difference to me because I know for a fact I cannot go to either.  Stupid facts....they think they're so smart... I'm hoping Osheaga will make it up to me. Fingers crossed.

Bonneroo tickets go on sale this Saturday

    Oh, and Loretta Lynn?  Huh?

The Coachella Lineup is Out but I'm Not Even Going to Bother

I'd planned to give the Coachella lineup and then write a little something to go with it. Suffice to say, it would have been both hilarious and thought-provoking.

But then things in this city got a bit ugly today, and I really could not be bothered. Sorry guys.

Instead, I'm just going to post it:

Lots of amazing stuff, but no big surprises. I'm sure a lot of people were hoping for the Bowie rumour to be true.

Also unfortunate: you'll see that contrary to rumours, It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia is NOT  going to be doing a live show. And that's all the excuse I need to post the following video. I know I could do with a laugh.

    Enjoy:

Boss Stuff on the Interwebs: Wednesday Links 12/01/11

    • The Strokes have finally set a date for a new album release: March 22nd. Linear Tracking Lives has details.
    • According to Spinner, Gorillaz have added a new member. I repeat--there is a new animated musician to care about. I'd call that geeky, but I'm a fucking blogger .
    • The Bruise Cruise departs from Miami and docks in the Bahamas. It has a spa, dining, dancing, day trips, a swimming pool and all that other good cruise stuff. Oh, and it's a floating music festival featuring the likes of The Black Lips, Vivian Girls, Strange Boys, Ty Segall, Surfer Blood, Thee Oh Sees, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Turbo Fruits and DJ Jonathan Toubin. Screw the buffet on this one. (Sonic Masala)
    • Speaking of festivals, Stereogum has the possible Coachella lineup. All in one place, you could see Paul McCartney, Sleigh Bells, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, PJ Harvey, Lykke Li, Diplo, Daft Punk, Gwyneth Paltrow... Wait, what?
    • ThisBonusTrack has a double dose of truly gorgeous music with Alcoholic Faith Mission and James Vincent McMorrow, all in one post.
    • Way back in the summer, guerolitomusic named electro-pop outfit Foster the People a "band to watch." They're usually right about these things over there so you might want to check out the new single.
    • Dominic over at This Moving Picture and I both made unrelated, out-of-date Jeff Spicoli references on the same day, his about Ducktails, mine about La Femme. That's a bizarre enough coincidence to make this list.
