Sprawl II is my favorite track off The Suburbs, so I didn't expect to like this. But keeping it mellow actually added something to it. It won't best the original, but it's solid.
I bet I can count on one hand the number of covers better than the original... I might not even take a hand...Joe Cocker doing the Beatles and Jeff Buckley doing Leonard Cohen are all that springs to mind right now...
But I agree that this version just managed to add something new. Which every good cover SHOULD do. Nothing worse than a cover that changes nothing, amiright?
I can think of a fair number of covers that I like better than the original. Most of them did it by either going insanely differently than the original (Matt Foster's Lotus REM cover) or by basically sticking to the original (Warpaint's Ashes to Ashes David Bowie cover). This one changed the mood of the song, didn't change it a lot though. I like the original better, but it's a great cover.
Any music posted is for sampling purposes only. If you like anything you hear on this blog, please support the artist by buying their music. Then maybe send them an e-mail of encouragement because money can't give them the warm fuzzies like a nice letter can.
If you represent an artist on this site and would like a song removed, e-mail me. I'll tear the song down and buy you a beer. Then we'll become best friends, I just know it.
